Steven J. Athanas

Athanas has been making art professionally for over 20 years. He has self-published several books of his drawings and pomes (his term), as well as releasing multiple recordings of his original songs. He received his BA in Art Education at the University of Toledo, taught in Toledo, Baltimore, and West Palm Beach.

Athanas works in both 2D and 3D. His sculptural work utilizes refurbished and found items, such as rusty wire and objects from nature, as well as tissue paper, clay and whatever he can get his hands on.

He has long been making mobiles and sculptures using various papers and attaching them to a wire armature to make fish, birds, human and abstract forms. They can be painted on with acrylics and coated with water-based polyurethane for strength.

His work has shown in NYC (Slovakian Embassy), Baltimore (American Visionary Art Museum, Jedidiah Gallery), Washington D.C. (Slovakian Embassy), Northwest Ohio (Hudson Gallery, Makers Mart, Toledo School for the Arts, TAA Show, Madhouse Gallery, Wolfe Gallery) Michigan (Flatlanders Art Gallery, Judith Racht Gallery, Virgil H. Carr Cult Center, Liberal Arts Gallery, Ella Sharp Museum), Chicago (Intuit Center), Cleveland (Art On Madison), West Palm Beach (WPB Juried Art Show - placed 2nd, Meyerhoefer Gallery, Bay Harbor Art Walk).
